The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
