Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
