A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
